In the case of Marmalade Gumdrops, the play was not created by our community, but it was created for it. Having the importance of keeping your imagination laid out in a simplistic form such as in a child’s bedroom, people of all ages are able to bond and connect with it. The days of children getting lost in a good book are gone, but by having this connection to his bookcase (envisioning knowledge), this child has now created a world of his own. By having a chair that takes this child’s anger away, and a lamp that isn’t as bright as you would think, the audience can see that the child in the play is learning to teach with stories, and learning to control feelings, all by learning to imagine and let go. In community theatre, language is a key point when considering a story. Every word and every context given to the audience in Marmalade Gumdrops is easily understood by a child, and yet the subtext of some actions, such as the lamp blowing bubbles every time a new idea was formed, would be something that the adults would notice more than the children. The idea that â€Å"Imagination is like a marmalade gumdrop; once youve tasted it, youll never settle for just plain. â€Å"is such a simple and imaginative thing, and yet it is something that communities, particularly adults, forget. Whether it be because it’s just how things work, or because of influences, people forget what it is to be a kid, or just what it is to have an imagination. As the play progresses, audiences are subconsciously prompted to use their own imagination. As each new prop emerges or as a new scenario starts, the viewers start seeing things that could happen, or things that they themselves would do with what is shown on the stage. They start to want to bring everything to life the way that the characters do in the play. When the child, Walter, picks up an object out of the box, the entire cast on stage (the desk, the bed, the lamp etc) all lean in, and are excited to see what happens next. This in turn gets the viewers excited, and creates a longing to be imaginative. This in itself proves the fact that community theatre is an effective way to not only view, but create, triumphs. Every time Clair (the lamp) blows â€Å"thought† bubbles, and Winthrop (the chair) takes of his hat, audiences are awaiting a new adventure, and a new taste of something long forgotten. For the children in the audience, a sense of fun and excitement bubbles up. This play is a way of showing the children that having an imagination is ok. Having fun is not only ok, but that to have fun, you don’t even need much. With today’s society full of â€Å"I need† and â€Å"I want† when it comes to new fashions and toys, the natural response to imagination has become â€Å"that’s stupid†. Marmalade Gumdrops not only shows, but proves, that simple things in life count, and that things are never the same once you know how to imagine. By creating this play, Marmalade Gumdrops, Carol Lauck has shown the true meaning of imagination. The telling of so many stories all within one big story is such an effective way of grasping an audience’s attention. This is exactly what community theatre is all about. Using characterisation and relatable scenes, Carol has created an ideal way to show this community a message. It has shown us a challenge, and it has taught us how to beat it.

The first and probably the most obvious aspect to his character is that of the magician. Some critics argue that the 4 main characters on the Island can be said to represent different attributes to humanity: Caliban represents instinct, Miranda represents love, Ariel represents spirit and Prospero represents power. Prosperos incredible magical powers contribute to this interpretation of his character. His character is also interpreted as being like a puppet-master. I think this is an appropriate image of Prospero as he uses his incredible powers to rule over people, influencing and controlling them with his magic for his own personal purposes. He controls Caliban with threats and acts of physical violence saying: Tonight thou shalt have cramps, side stitches that shall pen thy breath up. This shows Prosperos puppet-master side using his incredible power to control people and making them afraid of them. The author also uses the rule of three to show the extent of Prosperos threats towards Caliban. He also controls Miranda, this time though he does not resort to physical pain or violence he puts a spell on her instead. I believe he does this to show off and feed his ego. Also he does this to suit his personal interests. In this way Prospero often abuses his power. Also again he is showing off his great power as a magician controlling Ferdinand making him unable to fight back. Prospero is again shown to be extremely powerful; this time he does not only control beings but the elements themselves. He creates a storm, controlling it. He creates a storm for revenge on his brother and the king, once again abusing his power. He controls the storm so that no one is killed Not a hair perished. This again shows his enormous magical powers and ability as a magician. I believe the writer uses the storm as a symbol to show the anger that Prospero has for his brother. I also believe it symbolises the chaos and destruction that Prospero can cause. I think as a magician Prospero is extremely powerful but he often abuses this power, he uses it to control people and to gain revenge. But although this is true he is justified for wanting to gain revenge on his brother as he has been stabbed in the back and thrown from power. As well as this the audience learns there are other aspects to his character. The next aspect is that of The Father. This part of Prosperos character also has positive and negative parts to it. At times he is caring, protective, loving and concerned but at other times he is overprotective and controlling. He exploits his daughter to gain revenge and he tests his daughters feelings for Ferdinand instead of letting her find out her feelings for herself. One positive aspect of Prosperos relationship with Miranda as a father, is that he is caring. Evidence of this is seen when Prospero says Tell your piteous heart theres no harm done. This shows he is caring as he sees his daughters distress at thewreck and reassures and comforts her. He is also very protective of his daughter, which is another positive aspect of his character. He says: I have done nothing but in care of thee. However, it can be argued that Prospero uses his daughters welfare as justification for his revenge. I dont believe this is fair because I believe Prospero probably would have tried to take revenge even if he did not have his daughter. An audience also learns there is a loving part of his character. This is obviously another positive aspect, he describes his daughter as a cherubin, which gives her an almost angel like image. He says: It was thou that did preserve me. This is the kind of doting that many fathers show in their relationships with their daughters. It is obviously a good thing as he loves and cares for Miranda and just shows his affection. He shows his care for Miranda also when he tests Ferdinands love for his daughter, saying: But this business I must uneasy make, lest too light winning make the prize light. He is concerned for Mirandas feelings, which shows his love, but him interfering may show how he is overprotective. His overprotectiveness is a very negative aspect of his relationship with Miranda. But this could also be a very positive aspect to his character as it shows he loves and cares for his daughter. Another example of how he can be seen as overprotective is he has kept Miranda ignorant of what thou art. So he has kept from the knowledge of her noble past, protecting her from the public. In a way this is a positive aspect to his character as he is only protecting his daughter from what he believes will hurt her, but it is also a negative aspect as she should be allowed to live her own life and sort out her own problems. One negative aspect of his character which cant be at all positive in the sense of Prospero the father is that he exploits her love for Ferdinand which also helps him gain his revenge. Evidence of this is when Prospero says: It goes on, I see, As my soul prompts it. This shows that he is willing Miranda and Ferdinands love to last so he can exploit it to gain his revenge. Also, another negative aspect to his character as a father is the fact that he I controlling. He does not just control her actions as a normal father may, such as not letting her see certain people or disciplining her. He controls her actions physically using his powers; in one case he casts a spell: Here cease more question; thou art inclined to sleep. This is not good as he is not just misusing his powers, using them on people but he is almost taking his daughters freedom to live. He uses it to suit him and does not consider how it may hurt or affect others. So this is obviously one of the most negative aspects Prospero has as a father. I think as a father Prospero is a very loving person, which leads to his overprotectiveness. I believe he does not exploit her but he does genuinely love her. He tries to do his best for Miranda and does things he believes are in her best interests, this is a very humane part to his character. Another very humane part of Prosperos character is that of the man. When he takes of his robe (which is symbolic of his superego.) we see a much more humane side to him, we learn about his past and the reasons he and Miranda were shipwrecked. One very human aspect of Prospero is the fact that he is shown to be very foolish and naive in his past. A good example of this is when he leaves his state to his brother: and to him put The manage of my state; Also another good example is seen when Prospero says: The government I cast upon my brother. This is obviously very foolish as this is a lot of power to hand over to his brother. I think that perhaps one of his most humane aspects is that Prospero is very arrogant. He believes he is great, powerful and perhaps better than many other people. A good example of Prosperos arrogance is when he talks about his position: And Prospero the prime duke, being so reputed In dignity, and for the liberal arts Without a parallel. The way in which Prospero keeps repeating his suggests that he is very arrogant. But this is very human and perhaps Prospero is just proud of what he has achieved. Another example of Prosperos is shown when he says Alas poor Milan. He is shown to be very arrogant as he feels that the city cant be without him as their leader. His pauses that are caused by the writer who uses commas to create a dramatic caesura, emphasises his upset, which may suggest his arrogance even more so. Prospero at times is quite single minded or self-absorbed. An example of this is when he says: And to my state grew stronger, being transported And rapt in secret studies. This shows that Prospero is self-obsessed. He is described as a stranger to his state and it says rapt in his secret studies. Which in my opinion is a little irresponsible. As he is so obsessed in his secret studies it gives his brother the chance to overthrow him. Another example that shows Prosperos irresponsibility is when it says he was neglecting worldly ends. This shows he is placing his personal interests over his public responsibilities. He notices this, showing how irresponsible he is as he does nothing about this. He says I loved my booksabove my dukedom. I believe this shows he is extremely irresponsible. Being so wrapped up in his studies gives his brother the chance to overthrow him. Another aspect to Prosperos character as a man is his bitterness towards his brother overthrowing him. This is shown when Prospero says: He was The ivy which had hid my princely trunk, And sucked my verdue out ont. This is good imagery which describes Prosperos brother as the ivy which is sucking the life or power from the tree which in this case is the imagery used to portrays Prospero. The imagery portrays Prosperos brother as a parasitic plant which is living off the life of others, I think this is very good imagery as Prosperos brother id living off his brothers good work. I think this is a very human part to Prosperos character as the man as many people feel this emotion towards one another. I think this is a negative part to his character as he is doing anything by being bitter or resentful. I think that he should have tried to take action on his brother. Another very human side to Prosperos character is when he is very self pitying. It is a negative point as I believe people should not self-pity but should get on with life. An example of this is when Prospero says: Me, poor man, my library was dukedom enough. This is an example of Prospero self-pitying. The commas emphasise his upsets by creating dramatic caesuras. This again, also shows his self-obsession and shows him trying to gain sympathy from Miranda. As a man prospero is also very biased going back to the quote: Oh a cherubin, you were the only one who preserved me. This shows Prosperos biased towards his daughter Miranda. Saying that she was the only one who preserved him, whereas there were many other factors, whys Prospero was saved, Gonzalo being one of them giving Prospero the supplies he needed to survive on the island. I think as a man Prospero is a very negative character. Displaying mainly negative qualities of a human, foolishness, arrogance, irresponsibility, bitterness and also self-absorption. I think overall The man side to Prosperos character is his weakest aspect. The final aspect of Prosperos is the aspect of master of slaves. In this aspect we learn about Prosperos relationship with both Ariel and Caliban. There are many positive and negative aspects to his relationship with each character. The first positive aspect in the relationship between Prospero and Ariel, is the huge amount of respect Ariel has for Prospero. A good example of this is when Ariel says: All hail, great master! Grave Sir, hail! To answer thy best pleasure. Shakespeare shows the respect Ariel has for Prospero by writing Ariel to refer to him as great, sir. Also we see that Ariel is a very willing servant. As her enthusiasm is shown with the use of exclamation. Another positive aspect to the relationship between Ariel and Prospero is the warmth of emotion Prospero shows towards Ariel. An example of this is when Prospero says: My brave spirit! Who was so firm, so constant! When Prospero refers to Ariel as my brave spirit! the use of the word my suggests a more personal relationship between the two characters. He also uses the word brave to compliment and flatter Ariel. The strength of his emotions are emphasised by the exclamation mark once again. The final Positive aspect in the relationship between the two characters is the willingness of Ariel to help and please Prospero. An example of this is shown in: Thats my noble master! What shall I do? Say what! What shall I do? The willingness is shown by Ariels enthusiasm. This enthusiasm is shown by the use of repetition and also exclamation marks which emphasise her excitement. As well as these positive aspects there are also negative aspects. One of these negative aspects is when Prospero blackmails Ariel. He brings up her past saying: Dost thou forget? from what torment I did thee free? I believe this is quite ironic as Ariel is not completely free as Prospero now enslaves her. Another negative point in the relationship between Prospero and Ariel is seen when Prospero promises Ariel freedom but almost at a price. Thou shalt be as free As mountain winds. But then exactly do All points of my command. This is negative because although Prospero promises freedom he has still not freed Ariel but still uses his promise to blackmail her. He uses his promise conditionally, using Ariels own trust against her. The final aspect in the relationship between Ariel and Prospero is a negative one. It is the abuse that Prospero gives Ariel also bringing up Sycroax from her past. This is shown when Prospero says this to Ariel: Thou liest malignant thing! Hast thou forgot? The foul witch Sycroax, who With age and envy Was grown into a hoop? Has Thou forget her? Prospero is abusive to Ariel calling her names like malignant thing He also uses repetition to make her remember her past. I believe that Prospero is trying to appreciate where she is now. Although he is using emotional blackmail to get what he wants from Ariel. The other relationship is with his other servant Caliban. Once again there are both positive and negative points. The first positive point is that when Prospero first landed on the isle their relationship was mutually caring. An example of this is: When thou camst first Then strokst me and made much of me. This is as though Prospero treats him like a pet using the word strokst to portray animal imagery but still cares for him as an owner would his dog. A positive point in this relationship is the cooperativeness shown by Caliban when he educated Prospero as how to survive on the island. This is shown when Caliban says: And then I loved thee, And showed thee all the qualities oth isle. This shows that Caliban did have respect for Prospero. Although I am not sure if Prospero truly cares for Caliban, I believe that Prospero may be using him to find out more about the island. Once again as well as these points there are also negative aspects of his relationship with Caliban. The first negative aspect is that Prospero uses pain to control Caliban. An example of this is If thou neglecstthy din. This shows the amount of pain that Prospero is causing as you would have to be in a huge amount of pain to make this level of noise. This also shows the level of pain Prospero is willing to cause to get his own way. He rules Caliban through Calibans fear which is Prosperos final negative aspect. Calibans fear is seen when he says: I must obey. His art is of such power, It would control my dams god, Setebos, And make a vassal of him. This shows how much Caliban fears Prospero he says that his power is such that it would control my dams god. This shows that Caliban believes that Prospero is so powerful that he could even control his god, Setebos. On the whole I believe that Prospero is a hugely mixed character. I believe Prospero is very human in some ways. His human attributes mainly being seen in the aspects The man and also The father this is probably Prosperos weakest side. It shows him to be foolish and weak. But away from his human side Prospero is seen to be extremely powerful. This side of his character is seen in the aspects The magician and also Thee master of slaves. Despite having many negative aspects I believe that Prospero is not completely negative. When it comes to the aspect of The father I believe he is just overprotective. Also as The man I believe that he is just very human and made mistakes. All together I believe that Shakespeare has managed to create an extremely real character in Prospero. He is not entirely perfect but tries hard in everything he does but makes mistakes.

Sonnet 93 by E. Barrett Browning Essay Throughout the first eight lines of the sonnet the language is simple and personal. There is little elaboration and imagery which shows her true love and shows that the sonnet wasnt written to impress the public. This differs from the other two sonnets as they were conventionally written to amuse the reader and in order to do this they included complex language and imagery. The line beginning the final section of the sonnet shows that she loves Robert Browning with the depth, trust and emotion a child feels for their parents; I love thee with the passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhoods faith. Following this the next line supports a popular belief of the Victorians which was when you are born you are born pure and innocent. As you grow up you gather sin and impurity, and become further away from God. E. Barrett Browning says that Robert has taken away her sin and bought her closer to God once more just like when she was a young child; I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints, She also expresses that she loves her husband with every emotion she goes through in her life; -I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life! The last line in the sonnets suggests her love is eternal and she will love Robert even in the afterlife; -and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death. E. Barrett Browning doesnt use a Volta in her sonnet as she wants to show her love is continuous and eternal which is a contrast from the other two poems. All three sonnets appear to be about love but all show different meanings. Shakespeares sonnet seems to be about a true physical attraction to a lady and how her beauty is eternal when in fact he is really saying the beauty of his words are eternal. On the other hand Draytons sonnet appears to be about a dying woman when in fact its about a fading love desperate for love to be breathed into it. Finally E. Barrett Brownings sonnet is totally sincere and includes no reversal of meaning. The sonnets also have different forms and language. Shakespeare and Drayton both write a Shakespearian sonnet with complicated and elaborate language whereas E. Barrett Browning uses a Petrarchan form with simple language. Another resemblance is that E. Barrett Browning and Shakespeare consider love relates to time. The most obvious contrast is that Drayton and Shakespeare both use a Volta whereas E. Barrett Browning doesnt. Although I liked the clever, witty changes of meaning in the sonnets by Shakespeare and Drayton my favored sonnet would have to be Sonnet 93 by E. Barrett Browning. I liked it because of the sincerity of her love to her husband. I think when reading and understanding the sonnet the reader is emotionally touched by the strong feelings such simple words can put across.

I found out in my interview with Phil Gervais that unlike many of his generation he has a direction. He looks like any other 18 year old, but he is different because in some way he has what many of us lack: he knows what he wants. He wants to become a firefighter. Phil has found a passion that rules his life. Phil is pursuing a major in Social Rehabilitation but as soon as he finishes college, he will apply for a job with the Fire Department in his hometown of Ware Massachusetts. How did Phil develop this passion? Phil's desire to become a firefighter is an inherited trait because for generations many members of his family served as firefighters. This family legacy remarkably influenced Phil's choices in life. His grandfather Ernie, an emigrant from Canada, became the first one to enroll as a volunteer firefighter. Then his father, his uncle and finally his aunt all became firefighters. Phil used to go with his father when he answered his fire calls. While accompanying his father in 1992, a time when Phil was only 8 years old, he saw a victim of a fire for the first time. His first encounter with a dead person did not discourage him from the idea of becoming a firefighter. How did it happen? One afternoon he went with his father to the scene of a fire and there he suddenly saw in the middle of the floor a dead body of one of the victims of the fire. Partially covered with a blanket, Phil could only see a few burned spots on the hands. Nevertheless, he was not scared. While accompanying his father on many fire calls, Phil heard many terrible noises and he felt the heat of the fire. He saw tragic sights such as the dead body on many occasions. These scenes became commonplace during his childhood. Now eighteen years old, Phil works as a volunteer firefighter in his hometown. Outdoor activity gives many mental or physical advantages to people. Therefore, many people love outdoor activity for various reasons regardless of its characteristic. For example, some like outdoor activity because of his or her own satisfaction. In addition, others do outdoor activity because it helps them to improve their health.However, the reason why I love field activity is on account of three important changes in my body : being refreshed, being short of breath, being thirsty. The first change which field activity creates is being refreshed. When I have trouble in studying or working, I have a splitting headache. It feels like being struck on the head by a hammer. At that time, I go outside and do simple outdoor activities like walking or skipping. Then, I feel the fresh air flowing through my veins ,and I am recharged.For example, when I was a high school student, I usually did a simple ball game when I was tired of studying. Therefore, being revived is the first change of my body which makes me do open-air activity. The second part of variety that field activity makes for me is being short of breath. There is no doubt that being short of breath is a very tiring feeling to anyone. I feel that exhausting feeling as well. However, though it is painful, I feel alive when I am scant of breath.For instance, when I do exercise which needs sustaining power like a marathon, I become so excited and aggressive since I think I am exceeding the limit of my physical strength. Thus, being scant of breath is another motivating power that makes me enjoy an outdoor activity. Finally, the last significant body change that motivates me to do open-air activity is being thirsty. The reason why being thirsty can be the cause of doing field activity is because drinking water after outdoor activity gives me happiness which cannot be described.For example, I become the happiest person in the world and feel as if I can fly while drinking water after doing a field activity. †¢Good evening, Mr. Robinson, Ms. Divine, distinguished Candidates and I’m honored to know many of you too well to call you Ladies and Gentlemen†¦Errhhhmmmm. Class of 2014, I’m going to be straight with you. I’m not superman, I cant stop world hunger, convince Mr. Roach to give a free day, teach my roommate Coulter to dance or even bobsled. I can try but it would really take a miracle to teach Coulter how to bust a move. Just look at him. †¢I’m running for class president. Many of you may not even know what the class president does and some probably forgot we even had one.Nevertheless, I’m here to challenge first myself and then you. The challenge is to uphold the principles of a School culture based on(Listen up(someone in crowd), 3 important values) Community, School spirit and Accountability. †¢Our number one responsibility is to our school and by this I mean school and class collaboration. It would buuurn to see the last seme ster of Junior year just fizzle. I want people to be interested and involved, and I’m willing to challenge myself to go the distance to motivate our class. We are the Junior Class of 2014.In 3 short months this is our school. My aim is to make you feel more appreciated, more recognized and more supported. †¢ Another principle of mine, Accountability. Were a class with the collaborative potential to enact anything we desire. As a Junior straight out of Jamaica I bring a whole new perspective. You see, serving as Student Council president at my last school involved far more formality. Class President Speech Biology Assignment 5 Question 1 The pancreas is a large gland, situated in the peritoneal cavity, in the curve of the duodenum. It is the pancreas that is responsible for aiding the body’s endocrine system. (Darlington College 2011). The pancreas releases two endocrine hormones and it is these hormones that ensure the blood glucose levels within the body are constantly controlled. These hormones are glucagon and insulin and they are secreted from tiny clusters of cells within the pancreas, know as the islets of Langerhans. Glucagon is a hyper- glycaemic hormone, secreted by the islets alpha cells.Its main function is to increase the level of glucose in the blood. This is a vital process when blood sugar levels become low. Glucagon stimulates the liver to break down its excess glycogen into glucose. The glucose then passes into the blood stream and the homeostasis of blood glucose level is restored. Insulin is a hypo- glycaemic hormone that is secreted by the islets beta cells, in response to high blood glucose levels. Insulin decreases the level of glucose in the blood by stimulating its uptake by the skeletal muscles, liver and adipose cells.The skeletal muscles uptake glucose, to give energy for movement and the glucose that travels to the liver is converted into glycogen, and stored here until it is needed. The adipose cells use glucose for cell metabolism. Once sufficient glucose has been removed from the blood, the beta cells slow the secretion of insulin, so that homeostasis is again restored. (Glenn, 2005, pg84). Both insulin and glucagon are vital to ensure that the body constantly has enough fuel to supply its cells with the energy needed to enable them to function normally. Question 2 Peter’s normal blood glucose concentration will be approximately 4. mmol. After he eats his balanced meal his blood sugar levels will rise to around 8. 0mmol. This is because Peter’s meal will contain carbohydrates. In response to this rise in blood sugar levels insulin is secreted by Peter’s pancreas’s beta cells. The release of insulin facilitates the entry of glucose into his body cells and this vital process maintains the energy levels within the cell. When glucose is absorbed in the cells, the blood sugar levels fall again. This occurs because the excess sugar, present in the carbohydrates in Peter’s meal, that caused his blood sugar levels to rise, has been used up.This is what allows the blood glucose concentration to return to normal. (Glenn, 2005, pg85). When peters blood sugar levels drop, because he needs more food, glucagon is released from the pancreas alpha cells in response. Glucagon is a hormone that calls on the liver, which has its own glucose store, in the form of glycogen. Glycogen will release from the liver to allow the blood sugar to rise until it returns back to its normal rate. (Bowen, 2002). It is vital that Peter’s blood glucose levels are maintained at a normal rate, in-be tween his meals as large fluctuations in these levels can cause convulsions and could even induce a coma.Question 3 The body’s internal environment is constantly controlled and balanced by homeostasis. Homeostasis is the condition of equilibrium that is maintained through the body’s response to a change in conditions. There are many regulating systems within the body that work together to constantly control the internal environment. The nervous system and the endocrine system work very closely alongside one another to keep the body normal and in balance. Feedback systems are vital in keeping the body regulated. All feedback systems are made up of a receptor, a control centre and an effector.The receptor is able to detect any changes that may have occurred and send a message to the brain to tell it that it needs to respond. The brain acts as the control centre and is responsible for evaluating the messages it receives from the receptors. Once the messages have been proc essed the control centre generates a command, if one is needed. The commands are received by the effectors, which produce a response that is then able to change the controlled condition. (Darlington College 2011). A negative feedback system reverses the change in a controlled condition.When the body’s blood glucose levels fall too low, specialised receptors pick up this information and relay it the hypothalamus part of the brain, which forms the control centre. The hypothalamus then activates the response of the effector that allows the body’s blood glucose level to rise. When the levels become within normal range the receptors stop picking up the messages and no longer send them to the hypothalamus. This prevents the blood glucose levels then becoming too high and enables homeostasis of the internal environment to be restored. (Darlington College 2011). Question 4The body’s endocrine and nervous systems work very closely together to form the body’s major communication system. If a problem arises with one of these systems, homeostasis is upset. For instance: If the islets beta cells do not produce any insulin, such as in diabetes, the blood sugar levels will just continue to rise. This would cause extremely high blood sugar levels which would in turn go on to affect the body’s nervous system and could result in a coma occurring. The nervous system works in conjunction with the endocrine system by using nerve impulses and rapidly responding to stimuli, in order to adjust body processes.The integration of these systems is what enables homeostasis to constantly be maintained. For example, in Moby Dick, some people view the whale as the non-human antagonist for Ahab, the main character. Others believe that Starbuck is the main antagonist in the story. The point is that Ahab faces challenges to overcome, no matter which challenge is perceived by the reader to be the true antagonist. 5). Know the theme of each book. You probably discussed a major theme in class for each story, so be sure to remember what theme goes with what piece of literature. 6). Know the setting, conflict, and the climax for each work that you have covered. The setting can be a physical location, but it can also include the mood that the location evokes. Make note of a setting that makes the story more foreboding, tense, or cheerful. Most plots center around a conflict. Keep in mind that conflict can take place externally (man against man or thing against man) or internally (emotional conflict within one character).
